Resolved Question: In one shambling sentence, could you try to win a bad writing contest ? !?

These are so bad, they're good... SAN JOSE, Calif. – A shambling sentence about screaming seafarers on the sturdy whaler Ellie May stood shoulders above the rest in an annual bad writing contest "Folks say that if you listen real close at the height of the full moon, when the wind is blowin' off Nantucket Sound from the nor' east and the dogs are howlin' for no earthly reason, you can hear the awful screams of the crew of the "Ellie May," a sturdy whaler Captained by John McTavish; for it was on just such a night when the rum was flowin' and, Davey Jones be damned, big John brought his men on deck for the first of several screaming contests." The contest, a parody of prose, invites entrants to submit bad opening sentences to imaginary novels. It is named after Victorian writer Edward George Earl Bulwer-Lytton, who opened his 1830 novel "Paul Clifford," with the much-quoted, "It was a dark and stormy night ..." Contest categories include purple prose and vile puns. Among other winners announced Monday were: • "How best to pluck the exquisite Toothpick of Ramses from between a pair of acrimonious vipers before the demonic Guards of Nicobar returned should have held Indy's full attention, but in the back of his mind he still wondered why all the others who had agreed to take part in his wife's holiday scavenger hunt had been assigned to find stuff like a Phillips screwdriver or blue masking tape," from Joe Wyatt of Amarillo, Texas, winner in the adventure category. • "She walked into my office on legs as long as one of those long-legged birds that you see in Florida the pink ones, not the white ones except that she was standing on both of them, not just one of them, like those birds, the pink ones, and she wasn't wearing pink, but I knew right away that she was trouble, which those birds usually aren't," from Eric Rice of Sun Prairie, Wis., winner in the detective category.  more

Voting Question: Does anyone know how I can find contact details for authors?

I'm doing my PhD in a fairly new area of literature studies and because of this there is barely any critical sources available to me. I'm writing about 15 novels or so (most of them pretty recent) and I think it would be useful to get in touch by email with some of the authors to ask them a few qs and maybe get some quotes I could use. I've heard many writers will happily do this as its for research and validates / publicises their work even more, but I've spent hours searching through google and can't find anyway that I might contact them. Does anyone have some suggestions?? Thanks.  more

Resolved Question: Literary tattoos?!? What would you get?

I was looking at a web-site that shows images of tattoos people have gotten inspired by their favourite novel/play/poem. My favourite was a girl who had "It's history, it's poetry" (from the Catcher in The Rye) on her back in a type-writer font, I've never seen anything like that and I thought it she looked wonderful. If you were to get a literary tattoo, what line or quote from your favourite book/play/poem would you have? This is a hypothetical question, just for fun - I'm not interested in knowing if you think tatts are ugly or wrong, just give me a good quote! I'm not looking to get a tattoo myself, but I've read poems where a line has affected me and stayed with me for 20 years, so I understand why someone else would feel like they wanted to carry that line around with them on their body. But like I said, this question is just for fun :-)  more

Resolved Question: Why use square brackets?

I see news reports and other things using square brackets quite a lot. Sometimes I think I understand why they are used and what it actually means and then other times they totally throw me off. Here are 2 examples from the same article on the BBC website: This one I can understand: "I am obviously pleased in our area we have identified these [cannabis factories] and shut them down." Because it's a quote and the person who spoke the words just said 'these' and the writer puts what 'these' are in square brackets to make the reader understand what 'these' refers to. This one I cannot understand: "My little [Holly], I had a job getting her up in the morning, it was almost as though she was drugged, probably stoned." How does that make sense? Please explain how, when and why you would use square brackets! Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: Forgotten Sayings of Jesus (in Christianity)?

Jesus made it clear that he is not God "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone." (Mark 10:18) A man had ran up and knelt before Jesus and called him "Good Teacher." Jesus used the opportunity to make it clear to people that they must not praise him more than a human being deserves to bepraised. Jesus depends on God for Authority: God depends on no one: "I can do nothing of my own authority" (John 5:30) "I do as the Father has commanded me." (John 14:31 RSV) Needless to say, God does not receive commands from anyone. "The words that I say to you I do not speak of my own authority." (John 14:10 RSV) "I do nothing of my own authority but speak thus as the Father has taught me." (John 8:28 RSV) God has full authority, and full knowledge. He cannot be taught, but He teaches. --------------------------------------... Jesus is not Equal to "The Father" "The Father is greater than I." (John 14:28 RSV) People forget this and they say that Jesus is equal to the Father. Whom should we believe--Jesus or the people? --------------------------------------... Jesus Does Not Know Everything Speaking of the Last Day, Jesus said: "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only." (Matthew 24:36) --------------------------------------... Did Jesus Raise Himself up? God raised him up. (Acts 2:24) Jesus did not have power to raise himself up. God had to raise him up, as the author of Acts says. ----------------------------------------... Jesus prayed to God: God prays to no one "Abba, Father, all things are possible to thee; remove this cup from me; yet not what I will, but what thou wilt." (Mark 14:32) Jesus fell on his face and prayed to God, begging God to save him from crucifixion. This also shows that Jesus had a will different from God's will. The writers of Matthew, Mark, and Luke tell us that it was Jesus's wish to be saved from crucifixion, but it was God's will to let the crucifixion take place. "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46) --------------------------------------... Jesus did not know the tree had no fruit He [Jesus] was hungry. And on seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it , he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. (Mark 11 12-13) When he saw that the tree had leaves, he thought that he might find fruit on it. But when he came up close to the tree he realised there were no fruits. After all, it was not even fig season. --------------------------------------... Jesus referred to as Servant of God "Behold my servant whom I have chosen." (Matthew 12:18 In this passage God calls Jesus His servant) The God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus. (Acts 3:13) For truly in this city there were gathered together against thy holy servant Jesus. (Acts 4:27) Everyone, except for God, are God's servants. Jesus, too, is God'sservant. --------------------------------------... Who was real Worker of Miracles? Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: (Acts 2:22 KJV) People say that since Jesus worked many miracles, he must be God. But here we see that God did the miracles; Jesus was the instrument God used to accomplish His work. Jesus was a man whom God approved of. This means he was a righteous man. --------------------------------------... Jesus cannot guarantee positions "To sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father" (Matthew20:23) Therefore if we want to secure our position with God in the life hereafter we must turn to God and ask Him. --------------------------------------... A Misunderstood saying I and the Father are one. (John 10:30) People like to quote this saying, but they forget the followingsaying: John 17:11 Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. This shows that what was meant was one in purpose, not one in substance as people think. The disciples could not become one human, but they can pursue the same goal. That is to say, they can be one in purpose, just as Jesus and the Father are one in purpose. --------------------------------------... Did Jesus say everything John says he said? John 14:9 Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life. John 8:12 I am the light of the world. John 8:58 Before Abraham was, I am. John 10:7 I am the door of the sheep. John 11:25 I am the resurrection, and the life. John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. John 15:1 I am the true vine. Christian scholars tell us that if Jesus had made all these fan are christians aware of those verses?!are they out of context?! yes or no? thanks .  more

Resolved Question: Does this line sound alrightt?10points!?

In this essay I will be discussing 2 famous poems “Composed Upon Westminster Bridge” written by William Wordsworth on 3rd September 1802 the day Westminster Bridge was opened to the public and sonnet 130 written by William Shakespeare. The poem “Composed Upon Westminster Bridge” writes abit of metaphors and lots of personifications, Wordsworth uses this quotation “The city now doth, like a garment wear the beauty”. The poet gives the city human qualities by saying that it wears the sunrise like a person wears clothing. Normally we don’t say that the city is wearing something and this is just another way of saying that the city is more than just a place. This makes it seem as if the poet is comparing the city to nature. From this quote I can clearly tell that the writer is trying to create a sharp effect to the reader he is trying to create a beautiful and calm imagery to the audience on the other hand the writer tries to make the reader feel themselves walking alone in the morning and seeing the city. He describes his love by using this personification “Earth has not anything to show more fair.” This means there is nothing more beautiful to be seen on Earth; William wordsworth uses this effective personification because it has an effective meaning, He’s trying to describe that the earth has a personality the reason for is it’s not a human as it is also free, “Composed Upon Westminster Bridge” the author for this poetry writes this sonnet for the reader’s to imagine the beauty of this moment, by using words like “beautifully”, “glittering,” and “bright.” We are told that earth has nothing fairer and that it’s a sight so touching that only a dull person would pass without realising what the sight was or know the place. “All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.” Wordsworth gives the river a gender. I can clearly say that Wordsworth is enjoying the beautiful scene from this quotation “ The River glideth at his own sweet will.” He includes how he feels about the ‘fog is smog’ when its cold on the other hand he talks about the river as if it has a mind of its own and goes wherever it wants. Here is a quotation “The river glideth at his own sweet will” this is an effective quotation as the writer tries to attract the attention of the readers. Alternatively he describes the city as a pierce of cloth its as if a person woke up and made/put beauty to the sky, to balance this here is a quotation to prove my point of view ‘like a garment, wear the beauty of the morning silent, bare’. When Wordsworth writes he uses metaphors that talks about positive things whereas sonnet 130 by Shakespeare say’s negative things/bad things. now can u tell me if its good? and write a paragraph about sonnet 130 please i been working for 4 hours to write this and need help on sonnet 130 thankx! 10 POINTS edit:i am not enlish i am ireland so some of my enlishmany nt so good!  more

Resolved Question: Is the Bible the 'word of God" (Current one)?

My brothers , sisters, and elders in humanity, and or faith, i greet you all with the islamic greeting, aslamunalykum, peace be on you. The topic of my question is 'is the bible the word of god'. I want to do justice on this topic, and i want mature answers. Simply saying offensive things about the Holy Quran is not needed. I will convey this question with utmost respect. I too believe the Torah,Pslams, and New testement is God's word. However, the one's you all posses today are not the same as original given to the prophets. This discussion in on the Bible. Let me start firstly. Personally, you are putting your selves as easy bait for the athiests christian brothers and sisters. The current Bible is taken from a manuscripts THREE HUNDRED YEARS AFTER IT WAS REVEALED(NEW TESTEMENT). Here is what the people who issued the revised standard version have said ; "THE KING JAMES VERSION (alternative description of AV) HAS WITH GOOD REASON BEEN TERMED 'THE NOBLEST MONUMENT OF ENGLISH PROSE.’ ITS REVISERS IN 1881 EXPRESSED ADMIRATION FOR 'ITS SIMPLICITY, ITS DIGNITY, ITS POWER, ITS HAPPY TURNS OF EXPRESSION ... THE MUSIC OF ITS CADENCES, AND THE FELICITIES OF ITS RHYTHM.’ IT ENTERED, AS NO OTHER BOOK HAS, INTO THE MAKING OF THE PERSONAL CHARACTER AND THE PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS OF THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING PEOPLES. WE OWE TO IT AN INCALCULABLE DEBT." Can you, dear reader, imagine a more magnificent tribute being paid to the "Book of Books" than the above? I, for one, cannot. Let the believing Christian, now steel himself for the un-kindest blow of all from his own beloved Lawyers of Religion; for in the very same breath they say: "YET THE KING JAMES VERSION HAS GRAVE DEFECTS." And, "THAT THESE DEFECTS ARE SO MANY AND SO SERIOUS AS TO CALL FOR REVISION . . ." This is straight from the horse's mouth, i.e. the orthodox Christian scholars of "the highest eminence." Another galaxy of Doctors of Divinity are now required to produce an encyclopaedia explaining the cause of those GRAVE AND SERIOUS DEFECTS in their Holy Writ and their reasons for eliminating them. It is also reported the current BIBLE BY CHRISTIAN STUDENTS PROBABLY HAS OVER 50,000 CONTRADICTIONS. want the article? http://www.jamaat.net/bible/AwakeArticle(1957).html EVEN if you cancel them down, you will be left with alot of errors. And one error even one means its not from God. The next question you ask is is the Holy Quran free from error? Yes. It opens a chalange for EVERYONE to find a SINGLE contradiction. Many of you will now go and find red herrings, but every single one of them is fully answerd. There is not one contradiction and even those genuine athiests ADMIT THIS. This is not about the Holy Quran but here's a quote; [004:082] Do they not then meditate on the Quran? And if it were from any other than Allah, they would have found in it many a discrepancy. Jesus(pbuh) according to the Bible said to preach the gospel, yet the writers who wrote it, most never even met Jesus(pbuh), and lived alot longer after he died. Logically tell me if they wrote those articles letters, extracts whatever you may call, and Jesus(pbuh) lived over hundreds of years before and preached the gospel, logic tells me he preached ANOTHER GOSPEL. the real and genuine one. Not the one written up hundreds of years after. Jesus(pbuh) according to the Bible is reported to say preach the gospel. Also there is not one chapter named " Jesus " but " Mark" Mathew" ect, and even they are thought not to have written it. Read this article :http://www.jamaat.net/bible/Bible4-6.html I have not done justice but have raised some points from this article. I'd live to leave you with these verses from the Holy Quran ; "When truth is hurtled against falsehood, falsehood persihes, for falsehood by its nature;bound to perish" - Surah 17:81 Please do visit the link, i am not trying to put this down your throats, this is a religion and spiritualy forum discussions are indeed allowed. Please post mature answers, i hope no one has taken any offence, i have given christian sources for most of my points. This is why it's so much easier to just not follow any religion. ___ There has only been one religion, the religion of Adam, Moses, Jesus, david and Muhammed(peace be on them all). Complete submission to the will of almighty God. All the revelations were perfect but man has changed, the Holy Quran remains the only perfect, but i do not wish to be like those knocking on doors so i'l leave it as that. "Islamic texts, being derived as they are from Judaism and Christianity, and post dating both, represent no improvement." ___ So The Holy Quran has copied? My friend there is not even ONE verse of this. Allah(s.w.t.) is the one who revealed the other divine scriptures. If I AM NOT SAYING THIS. BUT IF IT IS COPIED, WHY IS IT FREE FROM ALL CONTRADICTION, WHILST THE OTHERS CONTAIN MANY? LOGIC TELLS ME THERE WOULD BE CONTRADICTION. ALSO THERE IS CONFLICT BETWEEN THESE CHANGED VERSIONS OF DIVINE SCRIPTURES, AND THE PURE AND DIVINE HOLY QURAN. Brother, will all due respect research before making such false claims. (you are refering to the current human written and changed Bible right? I'm refering to this, not the original divine) "Jamaat.net "The ISLAMIC Comparative Analysis Site on Islam and Christianity"" ___ It contains a picture of the whole article written by christians. Nothing more. "1. The Bible is fully God's word i don't care what you say." ___ Yes, but not the one you posses brother, with all respects. I am not hear to mock you or hurt you. "... seeing they see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand." (Matthew 13:13) " "Deaf, dumb and blind, they will never return to the straight path" - Holy Quran 2:18 Simply believing YET all of this , is not faith but blindness. Secondly, because of your first question the rest of your points are lies, and i will tackle each one brother. I know nothing i say will change your mind. Even if i bring you every proof from the heavens to the earth. "1. The Bible is fully God's word i don't care what you say." ___ Yes, but not the one you posses brother, with all respects. Resolved Question: New World Translation Bible and use of Tetragrammaton in the Greek Scriptures - any evidence to support using?

In the NWT Greek Scriptures, Jehovah is used 237 times. 112 instances are quotes from the Hebrew Scriptures where they say YHWH was used. But the other 125 instances have no such reference to the Hebrew Scriptures. Did the early Christian writers use the Tetragrammaton or Kyrios in the Greek Scriptures? I would be especially interested to find out what the Kingdom Interlinear Translation (KIT) shows.  more

Resolved Question: Christians: A question regarding the gospel genealogies quoted for Jesus?

In the gospels, two separate genealogies are given for Jesus. One, the patrilineal line through Joseph; the second, the matrilineal line through Mary. As I understand it, a matrilineal line was an exceptional one for Jews at that time to have constructed let alone accepted. So, why two lines of descent from King David? Was this a reflection of the paternity situation with respect to Joseph? (If so, of course, why would it have been quoted by one of the gospel writers in the first place?) And second, would a matrilineal line to King David have been acceptable to Jews of that period as justification for Jesus's messianic claim? W r y: Yes, Karen Armstrong in her writing makes this point, and argues that John the Baptist *was* and so perhaps he and Jesus had originally planned to work together. An interesting though not wholly convincing theory. Avondrow: I agree, though not with the 'independently' element. I suspect that the later writer realised that a line through Joseph was a suspect one given that Joseph was no blood relative to Jesus.  more

Resolved Question: Do you know this J.B Preistley quote?

Okay Priestley l already asked for this a while ago but I only recieved one answer and it wasn't what I was looking for. I need a quote for 'An Inspector Calls' from this writer for the last part on my coursework, I can't find it anywhere. Resolved Question: "Too many pupils taking 'easy' a levels" What's your opinion on this article?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2007/aug/12/alevels.schools Do you think that maths and science should be given more points on the ucas tariff? Personally, I disagree completly with the article. I take English literature, History and Philosophy A level and I don't take them because they're "easy" but because they are subjects that interest me and I'm good at them. Yes I believe that if I took maths and science I wouldn't be able to secure a good place in university but that's because I find them dull and would be unmotivated. The professors quoted seem to think that the only intelligent people in the world are scientists and mathematicians, what about the world's brilliant writers and their English degrees? Resolved Question: Should JW's believe in "Should You Believe in the Trinity?"...?

How many JW's, who sincerely trust that Watchtower publications are honest & accurate in what they present, realise the following about the aforementioned WT publication, that - It's quoting from various "scholarly" sources, is HIGHLY selective (please see example below)? AND That some of those sources quoted, far from being conservative, Christian scholars, are, in fact, so-called "liberal" theologians, who refute orthodox Christian doctrine which even the Watchtower subscribes to? Example - "The fact has to be faced that New Testament research...has been leading an increasing number of reputable New Testament scholars to the conclusion that Jesus...certainly never believed himself to be God." - Bulletin of the John Rylands Library, Vol 50, (1967-68) p 247-261, as quoted in the WT publication, "Should You Believe in the Trinity?" The original quote including Watchtower omission (in caps) - "The fact has to be faced that New Testament research OVER, SAY, THE LAST THIRTY OR FORTY YEARS has been leading an increasing number of reputable New Testament scholars to the conclusion that Jesus HIMSELF MAY NOT HAVE CLAIMED ANY OF THE CHRISTOLOGICAL TITLES WHICH THE GOSPELS ASCRIBE TO HIM, NOT EVEN THE FUNCTIONAL DESIGNATION 'CHRIST', AND certainly never believed himself to be God." That is just ONE example of WT selective quoting from liberal sources, which here, not only deny the Trinity teaching, but also claim that the gospel writers falsely attributed the term, "Christ" to the Lord Jesus. The latter - even JW's would agree - is totally contrary to what the Bible teaches. Is it reasonable for the Watchtower Society to quote so selectively, and from such dubious sources, in order to refute the Trinity doctrine? The link - http://www.bible.ca/trinity/trinity-Rylands.htm See also - http://www.bible.ca/trinity/trinity-jw-deceptions.htm BTW, the purpose of this question is not to engage in debate over the the Trinity doctrine, but rather, to question the validity of the sources from which the WT quote, and the manner in which those quotes have been presented. So, please, no WT cut and paste Trinity refutations. Just your comments on the points made in this question, and the website sourced. Thanks in advance for your time. x So, angelmusic, you're quite happy for WT publications to quote from sources who don't even believe that Jesus was the Christ...? May I reiterate, the purpose of this question is not to engage in debate over the Trinity doctrine. The purpose of this question is to encourage JW's to question the honesty of WT publications such as "Should..." and the reliabilty of the sources from which they quote most selectively. May I encourage JW's to check out the links given above? To my knowledge, the author of the site is NOT a JW "apostate". Thank you.  more

Here's another Hemingway quote: "Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime."  more

Resolved Question: Porphyrias Lovers By Robert Browning I NEED HELP?

i have to write about porphyrias lover but i dont know what to write. i have this so far In this essay, I will be comparing two poems, ‘Porphyrias Lover’ by Robert Browning and ‘Ballad’ which has been published anonymously. I will be comparing the two poems and what the narrator’s feelings and attitudes are towards the two ballads. A ballad is a narrative poem that was popular in England in the nineteenth century. Ballads were passed down by generations of people. They had very basic language because the people who read them have basic education. A ballad is usually on the topic of Love and dishonest lovers. ‘Porphyrias lover’ was written in the nineteenth century. This poem is written as a monologue from the narrator who is the man in the relationship. The poem is written in one long stanza with a rhyming pattern of ABABB. The poem is about a madman who is a lover of a woman named Porphyria. The man who is the narrator of the poem is very protective of her and he feels that he is the only worthy man of having her love, I know this because in the poem he says ‘but he knows that she has another lover’ therefore he decides to strangle her with her own hair, I know this because he says ‘All her hair, in one long yellow string l wound, Three times her little throat around, and strangled her. In the poem, it says ‘And laid her soiled gloves by’. The word soiled means used more than once and this could also mean that she has also been used in the sense of having another lover besides the narrator. Another way to show that the man is insane is how he kisses her and opens her eyes when she is dead, the quote ‘I warily opened her lids: again, laughed the blue eyes without a stain’ shows that he wants look at her eyes again because he still has an insane love for her. Porphyria is seen as being graceful, she "glides" through the door and also as a very warm person, by the way she brings warmth into the cottage, when she came in she "shut the cold and the storm out". The weather that is described at the beginning of the poem reflects both of the characters in the poem. The writer uses personification describing the effects of the storm in comparison to the setting and the characters. The quote ‘The weather that is described at the beginning of the poem reflects both of the characters in the poem. The writer uses personification describing the effects of the storm in comparison to the setting and the characters’. Suggests this. The bad storm outside reflects how the man is feeling. His anger about Porphyria is boiling up inside him but he does not show this to her. The warmth inside the cottage reflects what Porphyria is feeling. The narrator ensures the flow of the poem is sharp by using alliteration such as, ‘Straight she shut; many examples of alliteration are used in the poem to keep it flowing. Homophones are also used near to where he strangles her he says ‘A thing to do and all her hair’. Although it feels like the narrator is speaking to the reader, it is almost like his is talking to himself about his wife and describing her and what type of a character she is. The narrator feels that he is in charge of Porphyria as it is quoted in the poem ‘at last I knew Porphyria Worshipped Me.’  more

Resolved Question: Do you like to read other peoples quotes?

Facts and truth really don't have much to do with each other. It's a shame that the only thing a man can do for eight hours a day is work. He can't eat for eight hours; he can't drink for eight hours; he can't make love for eight hours. The only thing a man can do for eight hours is work. The last sound on the worthless earth will be two human beings trying to launch a homemade spaceship and already quarreling about where they are going next. If a writer has to rob his mother, he will not hesitate: The 'Ode on a Grecian Urn' is worth any number of old ladies. Hollywood is a place where a man can get stabbed in the back while climbing a ladder. A writer is congenitally unable to tell the truth and that is why we call what he writes fiction. All of us failed to match our dreams of perfection. So I rate us on the basis of our splendid failure to do the impossible. Resolved Question: Could you correct the following text?

The terrible case of the sadistic foster mother Eunice Spry constitutes the starting point of the argumentation. The author maintains that the story of Eunice Spry is not an extraordinary one. The writer refutes the opposing view that we do not have to take much notice about the case of Eunice Spry because she was a Jehovah’s Witness. In proof of the fact that family violence is fairly common Wilson quotes some statistics on children dead at the hands of their parents or abused by someone in their families. The author supports the hypothesis that children respond to this abuse and violence by carrying knives or running away from home. The fact that the adult world does not offer real solutions to the threats children are subjected to is the reason for Wilson’s hypothesis.  more

Resolved Question: Regarding Proverbs 8, the Watchtower's alleged proof that the Word (Jesus) was created...?

Why do NONE of the NT writers apply any of these verses to the Lord Jesus Christ? And please, before anyone rushes to quote 1 Corinthians 1:24 in support of the WT position of the Word as a CREATED "master workman", consider the CONTEXT of this verse. That is, the preaching of Christ crucified (v.23) as the wisdom of God. Isn't it plain that Proverbs 8 is merely a personification of WISDOM, nothing more? The APOSTLES never applied this scripture to Jesus, regardless of whoever else (Trinitarian or not) has. So why does the Watchtower? Comments, please? x Wink Winklemar - The Watchtower's understanding of the Greek, "arche" (Rev.3:14), and Hebrew "qanah" (Proverbs 8:22), is the result of theological bias. "Arche", for example, can be translated lit. as "originator". For "arche", see http://cf.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G746&t=kjv For "qanah", see http://cf.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H07069&t=kjv Re Colossians 1:17 - "other" is NOT in the original Greek text, it is a NWT insertion, (again) motivated by theological bias. Neither is "other" present in the Greek of verse 16. Try reading the passage without "other". What do you get? (see also Romans 11:36, please) I see a quote from the Watchtower Society, but not from the apostles. Sincerely, Carl. By way of a reminder - The question basically is - Why no quote in the NT of Proverbs 8 in regard to Jesus, ***IF*** this scripture really refers to Him? There IS a quote from Psalm 103:25 - 27 applied to Jesus in Hebrews 1:10 - 12, and a quote from Joel 2:32 applied to Jesus in Romans 10:13 (see my previous question), but nothing from Proverbs 8. So what should professing Christians believe - Watchtower speculation, or the Bible? Wink Winklemar - In regard to "arche" - You (?) wrote, "In his Bible writings, John uses various forms of the Greek word arkhe more than 20 times, and these always have the common meaning of 'beginning'." First off, we should consider CONTEXT in order to determine the correct meaning of a particular word or verse. Rev. 3:14 is contained in a book which applies the UNIQUE title of "protos kai eschatos" to the Lord Jesus (Rev.1:17). ACCORDING TO WATCHTOWER TEACHING, this exact same Greek title is also applied TO THE FATHER (Rev. 22:13) How is it then, that an identical title which, by it's very nature, is unique (how many First and Lasts can there reasonably be?), can - according to the Watchtower - have two totally different meanings? The answer is, of course, due to theological bias... Secondly, according to you/your source, you imply that because the majority of John's uses of "arche" in the NT, "have the common meaning of 'beginning'", this somehow invalidates the claim that a different meaning should be applied in Rev. 3:14. Please, kindly inform us of where a "majority usage" RULE of some kind exists in NT Greek grammar? Also, you would do well to consider the CONTEXTS of John's usage of "arche" elsewhere in the Bible. Is the subject matter addressed in 2 John 1:6, for example, the same as that in Rev. 3:14? I think not. As a certain JW has quite rightly stated to me on at least one occasion, "context rules". Now, if only you gentlemen would practice what you preach, especially in the case of "interpreting" - rather than "spiritualizing" - verses such as John 10:16, and doing violence to it's context in the process. You might find the following statement from the late Greek SCHOLAR , Julius Mantey, helpful - "Outside the NT, we found the following ideas expressed by (arche): BEGINNING or SOURCE, eighty-seven times; authority, forty times; office, thirty-six times; ruler or commander, thirty-two times; realm or dominion, eighteen times." Depth Exploration in the New Testament, Page 100 (insert & caps mine). So, in regard to my original question, the answer is that NONE of the Spirit-inspired NT writers applied Proverbs 8 to the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, to do so, is - at the very least - to go beyond the APOSTOLIC, BIBLICAL revelation. phatfarm141 - So, according to your reasoning, professing Christians are free to dogmatically apply OT writings to Christ outside the boundaries of the New testament revelation? A theological free-for-all?  more

Resolved Question: Regarding Hebrews 1:10 - 12 and the New World Translation...?

In this section of scripture, the writer to the Hebrews quotes from Psalm 102:25 - 27 - part of a prayer addressed to JEHOVAH - and REAPPLIES it to JESUS. Why then, did the NW translators neglect to render "kurios" as "Jehovah", rather than "Lord" in verse 10? After all, the original OT text applied to Jehovah, didn't it? Could it be that their theological bias prevented them from doing what they have often done elsewhere in their translation of OT quotes by NT writers? Your thoughts, comments, please? Please note - this question is a re-submission of a similar earlier one, as I only received ONE JW response, AND THAT PERSON DID NOT EVEN REFER TO THE VERSES CONCERNED IN HIS/HER ANSWER. TeeM - Actually, the Bible says that all true Christians should be (and I quote your NWT), "..always ready to make a defense before everyone that demands of YOU a reason for the hope in YOU, but doing so together with a mild temper and deep respect." (1 Peter 3:15) I don't believe that, "Please Stop whining. You are sounding like the little boy that cries 'The big boys won't play with me.'" falls into that category... Hebrews 1:10, NWT - "AND: You at (the) beginning, O LORD, laid the foundations of the earth itself, and the heavens are (the) works of your hands.'" (caps for emphasis) This scripture is applied by the writer to JESUS, as both context and the use of the Greek "kai" to connect to the previous OT verse (Psalm 45:6,7 - also quoted in reference to JESUS) shows. Psalm 102 (the original source of the writer to the Hebrews quote) - The ENTIRE Psalm is a prayer to JEHOVAH - "O Jehovah, do hear my prayer..." (verse 1) "As for you, O Jehovah, to time indefinite you will dwell..." (verse 12) "I proceeded to say: 'O my God, Do not take me off at the half of my days; Your years are throughout all generations. LONG AGO YOU LAID THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE EARTH ITSELF, AND THE HEAVENS ARE THE WORK OF YOUR HANDS..." (verses 24, 25, caps for emphasis). Psalm 102 quotes from New World Translation. So, the writer of Psalm 102 addresses his words to both "Jehovah", and "God". The writer to the Hebrews applies the same scripture to JESUS. With all due respect, you do the math. Can you refute? I'll leave the question open till tomorrow. Sincerely, Carl. PS In regard to your comment, "Where is 'Lord' or 'Jehovah' in the original verse?" Terry, you ought to know better than that. The writer was obviously quoting from the Septuagint, and not from the original Hebrew. I suspect that you were well aware of that fact. So why the comment re the absence of "Lord"?  more

Resolved Question: Regarding Hebrews 1:10 - 12...?

Why have the translators of the Watchtower's New World Translation decided against rendering "kurious" as "Jehovah" (as they often have throughout the New Testament) in verse 10? This quote from Psalm 102, originally a prayer to JEHOVAH, is REAPPLIED by the writer of Hebrews to JESUS. The flow of the text CLEARLY indicates that the writer applies this section of the Psalm TO JESUS that was originally applied TO GOD. Hebrews 1:7 - The Father speaking of THE ANGELS. Hebrews 1:8 - The Father speaking to THE SON. Hebrews 1:10 - The writer prefixes his quote of Psalm 102 with "AND", indicating that this ALSO refers to THE SON. Hebrews 1:13 - The writer again applies another OT quote to THE SON. Therefore, this whole passage contrasts what the Father has said to THE ANGELS with what He has said to THE SON (which includes the Psalm 102 quote). That's THE CONTEXT, folks. Your thoughts, comments, please? BTW - Apologies for the lengthy additional details, but I thought it necessary to establish the context of the whole passage - i.e. contrast between the Son and the angels and His superiority to them, by means of quoting the OT - just in case any JW's might try to suggest that the Psalm 102 quote is STILL referring to the Father, here. Achtung Heiss - It seems even more remarkable to "trinitarians", when non-trinitarians answer a question referring primarily to Hebrews 1:10 - 12, without actually addressing the verses in question! Your answer was a first-class example of both subject avoidance and scripture-twisting PAR EXCELLENCE. AS FAR AS I CAN TELL, NOT A SINGLE JW WAS WILLING (OR ABLE?) TO ACTUALLY ADDRESS VERSES 10 - 12 OF HEBREWS CHAPTER ONE. Perhaps I ought to submit the question again?  more

It is a goverment ploy to prtend to care in order to gain votes and because they get large donations from insurance companys Quote The Launcet The average adult secrets as much body odour as the equivalent of smoking 9 strong cigarettes a day and once our senses have got rid of one smell then they will pick out another. The writer does not smoke or drink but I suspect does wiff a bit I have got a spell check but I wont try to impress you by useing it  more

Resolved Question: What does everyone Theist/Atheist, Agnostic and anything else think of these quotes?

"Be careful when you fight the monsters, lest you become one." Another less recognised less known by a fictional writer opposed to a phylosopher is. "I hope the shadow you chase is not the one you cast" What are your views on these quotes? I know they are not technically spiritual but some people here may appreciate them.  more

Resolved Question: RC's;Do you know the history of Catholicism? also from a modern perspective, was Martin Luther right ?

Johann Tetzel, was a Dominican Friar 1489-1519, he was commisioned by the Pope (Alexander VI) to preach the Jubilee Indulgence (Disambiguation) in 1502 and this he did for most of his ecclesiastic career. in 1513 Giovanni De' Medici was elected Pope (Leo X) he was quoted by Venetian writer as saying on the day of his election; "God has given us the Papacy. Now let us ENJOY it". Leo was a very educated man and he was seen as a great scholar, but he was also very good at spending lavishly on himself and his followers. It was not long b4 he was in need of financial help, thus he called on Johann Tetzel, to bring home the bacon. Johann used the phrase; " As soon as the coin in the coffers rings, your resued soul to heaven springs" to gain monies from Kings and Princes throughout Christendom, abusing the Papal act of Indulgence. Luthers 95 theses on the subject of Papal Indulgences were the main foundation of modern Protestantism. Do you still see RC as the true religion? Johann Tetzel died in leipzig in 1519, in disrepute and shunned by the very Papacy that had given him this task, he was not the instigater, just the pawn, but the Papacy used him as a patsy. would God let his Viceroy on earth behave in such a manner? if you are RC, why do you accept this behaviour? grannyof5, what you say about not caring what someone did years ago, proves that you have no knowledge of your own faith. The RC church was built on lies and deceit, popes like Damasus I were elected due to the murder and torture of their opposition. the RC is the trunk of the religious tree, the foundation of the entire Christian faith, so many branches have sprung from the tree, thus the rings inside the tree are just as important as the many leaves scattered throughout the world today. firefly, good answer, but did you swallow that dictionary!? ha ha, thanx for your e-mail, hope you do well in your history degree!!  more

Resolved Question: Can an artist have more than one theme?

Albert Camus, in the Myth of Sisyphus, says that it's impossible for an artist to have (ultimately) more than one theme. (Or something like that; I don't remember the exact quote.) Do all creators, whether writers or painters or film-makers, explore a single idea or preoccupation in all of their works, though they may ring the changes upon it?  more

Resolved Question: The absence of quotation marks in the new testament is an indication that what is said is not a direct quote?

What you read in the Bible is not what Jesus said but an interpretation by some of the desciples and in some cases accounts of things that the writer was never witness to himself. Christians are pegging their hopes that those that wrote the Bible wrote with out biased interpretion or misunderstanding. If God wrote the Bible then what was the point of Jesus?  more

Resolved Question: who coined the phrase, "the ten horses of evil"?

Resolved Question: Have you noticed that, more times than not, when the word 'famously' is used in an article eg. 'Mr X, who >

> FAMOUSLY said', the truth is that it was never that famous a quote at the time and much less famous many years later- in fact the writer may have only found out the quote through research? Or do I need to go out more. Don't answer that part.  more
