Voting Question: Finding salamanders in Rensselaer County, New York?

I live in Rensselaer County, New York and the only salamaders I can seem to find are Red-back Salamanders which are very common here. I have found other salamanders such as two-lined salamanders and possibly a spotted or tiger salamader larva. I see websites that tell me there are multiple other salamanders residing here, but I have no luck finding them. For example, at http://nyfalls.com/wildlife/Wildlife-reptiles-salamanders.html it shows that Jefferson, Four-toed, and Red salamanders and red spotted newts live in my county. I have no problem finding these salamanders and others in the Adirondacks at my camp, but it also shows their distribution in my county so why can't I find them here? Also, I know that one reason I might not be able to find some of the mole salamanders that live here is because they burrow 2 feet in the ground, but how could I spot these holes or burrows? I was most amazed when I saw that Red-spotted newts apparently reside where I live. These are very common at my camp in the Adirondacks, but I have never foiund one here. Where should I look and when? I looked in the same places as at my camp with no luck. By the way, the road I live on is on a hill, my house is just on the edge of this hill, to get to where I search, I walk down this 30-40 foot hill at the end of my yard and there are red-backs about under logs right at the bottom. If I walk another 100 feet, I get to a creek that is up to 4 feet deep in places. There is also a few marshes and ponds within 100 feet. I find red-backs down here under logs, two-lined salamanders under rocks on the shore of the creek and either spotted or tiger salamander larvae in a pond that formed from when the creek flooded. There is tree coverage down here and not much light. Where should I look and when to find the salamanders and newts that are supposed to live here?  more

Voting Question: How many people have thought about expatriating?

How many people have thought about expatriating? Not just so in the sense of a foreign earned income, but to step away from the American shores for a while, anybody thought about it? Personally, I moved to Turkey. I love it. The world has so many bennefits to offer. For instance: MY EXPERIENCES in Turkey, the people are more friendly than the busy day to day Americans... The econemy is going through a 28 year slum, so theres nobody to blame in particular. I am free to have my religion, even though it goes against the norm. I am free to own a gun and not worry about the government creating new laws making it impossible to do so. Criminals are prosecuted, much faster and punishments are much more harsh - you will see very little crime (you will see over pricing, and typical poverty stricken areas will have higher crime rates than others - but they are near in the numbers as some states in America) I can send my children out in the community and not have to worry about a predator snatching them... the community babies eachother and always looks out for one another in every aspect. Everything is sold just above cost (except clothing and automobiles). People everywhere are very friendly and greet you in such a fashion you feel welcome in even the most uncomfortable of places... when you dont fit in anywhere. Schools do not tolerate gang activity and defiance. There is NO SOCIAL WELFARE PROGRAMS (well very little anyway) so if you cant make it on your own, you aint making it period. Nobodys paying taxes to support a bum or a fat pig who doesnt want to work. Sex doesnt spray you in the face and your childrens face when you turn on the television. People are not loud and obnoxious in public places without regard to others. Services are Services... if you ask for something, you generally get what you asked for - not what is afforded to you. You get your moneys worth. The land is beautiful, and theres lots to do without having to do drugs or get drunk. The thing that impresses me the most, is the pride. When the people are upset, they dont burn their flag. They embrace it, and use it as a tool as if to say, "what is going on is not the Turkish way..." They have no tolerance for disgracing their country or their flag and especially the Ottoturk. They take pride in their culture, their children and their life... They are all eager to work, even though they dont have a chance... Instead of wasting the governments money on discussing homosexual marriage, under-pavement frog crossings, saving a marsh mouse (with a cool billion $)... these people ask only the most necessary things of their government (AS A WHOLE, and NOT DIVIDED LIKE AMERICA) like better roads, more recognition to national heros and icons, more government jobs... etc... I feel that my decision on leaving America, for the time being, was a great decision. My stress is low, my life is great, I never worry, I never feel disgusted, I dont feel like I have abandoned my country its already ruined... I will come back when its time, and now... is not the time. I love America, I served proudly in the Marine Corps - served in Iraq and Afg under direction of the Government.. But to be completely honest with you, I have forfeited all of my social security rights and pay no taxes... Why? Because I dont feel like the government is spending it on anything that I view worthy of Money, Time or life... And since the government was hand selected by a majority, of Americans... demographically city dwellers, I really feel it irrisponsible of me to waste my life, my families life trying to fit in to a problem ridden nation in America... when I have a warm accepting home in multiple countries around the globe. Just wondering how many others feel the same way? I have many friend already expatriated or in process...? is this becoming popular? ((Oh and just write *I AM A PROUD TO BE ISSUE THAT REQUIRES YOUR TAX DOLLARS* If you feel it necessary in a clice' way to tell me "good we dont need your kind in america anyway" I already know that, and its your attitude which has put me (as far as I can see - unless your Bill Gates) in a better position then anybody else back there standing by their man... and his insanely extreme machine of pork spending... @ Everything, I know my piece was long, but read it before being presumptious, You will be awarded no points... I said america was great, and I served her, but your avoiding the point - why would I give my money to a government that spends it on things I and 48% of america dissagree with... I am not abandoning anything, except my social security, but the fed abandoned that for you long ago. Ahh and PS: there is a Utopia... but its in the mind of the person viewing it. For instance, your Utopia is ignorance, I see you bathing in it to avoid the discomfort of living a lie, unless you like the lie. My Utopia is perfect. And I would ask for very little more in this life, other than a visit to my WONDERFUL home land in america. While America remains a thing of great pride and beauty, its leadership and its 52% of Whack jobs got a number of us running, in 2009 there was 211,000 total americans expatriated... not alone am I sister.. The grass is greener, and require no rose glasses. Enjoy.  more

Resolved Question: Environmentalists! I need your wisdom!?

Hey I need your help! So I am currently doing a debate about why this wetland site should be protected. I need to get together lots of reasons why this site would be beneficial to preserve. I am not the best at this and figured that there would be a lot of environmentalists out there that would have better insight...If you're feeling up to it - through me some of your knowledge! Thanks! The information about the site is listed below... This large marsh has remained little changed, surrounded to a large part by pasture lands. Agriculture has been restricted to the north end of the marsh while there is a similar marsh with a rich community protected by the Nature Conservancy (greenwood swamp). Various other marsh preserves are located further east, together forming a large complex. A new highway will be constructed through the middle of the site within the next six months. This cannot be stopped, but if the site is protected, extensive mitigation measures will be incorporated into the road construction to prevent run-off, car-proff crossings for turtles, etc. Traffic volume on the current highway is increasing. When it was built, little attention was paid to its effects on the marsh. A paper recylcing plant is planed on a parcel of land to the south along the highway. The paper plant will require a signficant water source. A local well appears to be the most cost-effective option. The majority of the marsh is classified as Southern Sedge Meadow, dominated by tussock sedge and Canada bluejoint grass. Addictional sedges are Carex diandra and C. sartwellii, marsh bellflower, marsh wild-timothy, water horehound, swamp aster, spotted Joe-Pye weed, marsh fern, and swamp milkweed are also very common. Much of the perimeter of teh sedge meadow is Shrub Carr, dominated by red-osier dogwood, silky dogwood, meadowsweet, and various willows. There are three patches of Oak opening forest on the higher ground within this property. The primary tree is mature Bur oak and Shagbark hickory. American hazelnut is common in the understory. The herb layer is native grasses and forbs present. There are several patches in the marsh forming "islands" of Cottonwood, American and Slippery elm. There is a farily large colony of nesting Great Blue Heron on one of these islands.  more

Resolved Question: Who were behind Mumbai attack?

5 Points That Destroy India’s Latest Mumbai Fairytale Written by www.daily.pk Tuesday, 02 December 2008 02:59 In 1988, Indian Navy and commandos took only 24 hours to storm Mamoon Abdul Quyum's palace in the Maldives when it was taken over by rebels and eliminated the rebels within another 24 hours. But in Mumbai, it India 60 hours to eliminate ten terrorists equipped only with AKs. The entire drama seems to be well scripted like Bollywood/Hollywood movies. On one side they blame ISI for planning, executing the whole episode and on the other hand they blame ISI for committing silly mistakes and leaving behind incriminating evidence to be picked up by the Indian intelligence so it could find easy links to Karachi/Pakistan. Some other India lies include: 1. Indians failed to detect movement of the alleged merchant ship from Karachi and then its off loading of passengers at high sea. 2. These 10 daredevils traveled in rubber dinghies up to Bombay shores unnoticed. Was the Indian coastal defense system asleep? 3. The terrorists waded through the marshes of Bombay coastline, reached the road network, hijacked police vehicles, divided themselves in three groups and then headed for their targets in the posh localities of Bombay, and EVERYTHING GOES UNNOTICED. 4. Like precision guided missiles these terrorists reach their targets and take over heavily guarded two 5-star hotels, dodging the security system of the entire city of Bombay and the internal security system of these 5-star hotels and the Jewish center also. 5. They fight it out with Indian commandos for 3 days and all but one is killed. The Indians claim that he is ISI sponsored. If we believe the Indian storyline, it defies logic. How can a professional spy agency like ISI commit the following mistakes: 1. Sailing the terrorist off from Karachi. Why not Dubai, Chittagong or Eden for better deception? 2. Credit cards of Pakistani origin in their pockets. Do the suicide bombers carry the IDs in their pockets? 3. Their Pakistani Punjabi ascent. The first lesson given to intelligence operators is to adapt to local environments. If such an operation was planned by Pakistan and ISI, the operatives would have known that they would have to communicate/ negotiate with the hostages and others and hence would have concealed this giveaway sign. I leave to the readers to decide if Indian lies are white or black. I also leave to you to decide whether this is a RAW/Mossad staged drama or that of Lashkar-e-Tayyeba and ISI? And how much credible are CNN and BBC anyway? http://www.daily.pk/politics/politicalnews/8416-5-points-that-destroy-indias-latest-mumbai-fairytale.html  more

Resolved Question: Could some one help me with this essay I'm desperate.I am not finished?

Discuss the cause and effects of global warming on the Bahamas then offer viable solutions Global warming, what does it mean? Global warming is often referred to as "the greenhouse effect". Both imply the absorption of energy radiated from earth's surface by carbon dioxide and other gasses in the atmosphere. Global warming threatens the whole world. Though it has had little noticeable impact on the world so far, its potential impact could be disastrous which is why global warming has become an issue ever present in the media and for governments. There are many causes such as greenhouse effect through the burning of fossil fuels, the rise in sea level, and pollution. You have heard that for every cause, there is an effect; well, the effects for us are. Agricultural practices, climate change, and the economic consequences and the solutions are renewable energy the Bahamas need to announce target for reduction for emission There are many causes of the greenhouse effect. The most common greenhouse gas is Carbon dioxide. The Bahamas depend solely they are released by the burning of fossil fuels; which is a major leading cause of concern for the Bahamas. These emissions can be seen when you start your car on a cold early morning and the muffler smokes. Also, the more cars sit for a long period of time on the road the more CO2 is admitted into the air. It can be seen in the form of smoke in the heavily populated cities like New Providence and Grand Bahama. Many things contribute to global warming. Such things are industries, transportation, electricity used, waste produced, and agriculture. The greenhouse is very vital to our being. Without the greenhouse effect, the earth would not be warm enough for the human race to live. But if the greenhouse effect becomes stronger, it could make the earth warmer than usual. Even a little extra warming may cause problems for humans, plants, and animals to carry on everyday life. Another cause for global warming is the rise in see level; most of our islands is in 5ft of mean sea level. The Bahamas being a low-line area; it is likely that the fresh water ponds will be severally affect in some islands of the Bahamas. There are many well fields in some of the islands of the Bahamas, which will become contaminated due to the rise in sea level; this spells disaster for those islands whose water is pumped from well fields meanly Andros and Grand Bahama. Paragraph 6 of Climate Change in the Caribbean by Larry smith states that, “Indications are that some fresh water marshes in the Bahamas have already become brackish, which may be attributed to rising sea levels. And it is known that well fields on Andros and Grand Bahama have been badly affected by storm surge in the past five years. Scientist are fervently trying to find ways to counter act the effects that the rising waters are causing, which includes island and beach erosion. Evidence of the public’s ignorance of the inevitable impact of Sea Level Rising is shown in the millions of people that are flocking to the coast. Rising sea levels, winds, and currents are constantly eroding beaches, and in fact whole islands are disappearing. First, air pollution causes a great deal of health problems. Wanting clean air is a good reason because air that is polluted can damage human health. Indeed, the air pollution causes numerous diseases and increase health problems like the asthma or breathing problems; thus this is a real concern! Some persons cannot live in a big city because of the high rate of air pollution in it. However, our health is not the only to be threatened, our environment is threatened too. Indeed, the air pollution causes some disorders on the environment. Bahamians have another source of pollution; Cruise ships in the Bahamas produce enormous quantities of unwanted gases and fumes. This makes it a major contributor of pollution in the islands. For instance, a cruise ship that calls upon the Bahamas spent one day in Nassau harbour or a few days at other developed islands. “Most cruise ship uses about 300 tonnes of fuel per day at sea, and significant amounts while in harbour”. {English 119 booklet Paragraph. 7} The Bahamas is a very low- line country; the highest point being 206 ft above sea level; thus, this make this makes the Bahamas vulnerable to the effect of climate change and higher temperatures and even an increase flooding due to heavier rains; this will result in more malaria, dengue and other tropical diseases. As former Best Commission advisor John Hammerton said recently, Given that most of the Bahamas is a low-line coastal zone subject to storm surge and sea level rise, we should be anticipating the possible impacts of climate change and developing strategies to protect our habitats and landscapes based on the predications.” Climate change could also have a serve effect on natural disasters. Resolved Question: ghost car joke?

A guy was on the side of the road hitchhiking on a really dark night in the middle of a thunder storm. Time passed slowly and no cars went by. It was raining so hard he could hardly see his hand in front of his face. Suddenly he saw a car moving slowly, approaching and appearing ghostlike in the rain. It slowly crept toward him and stopped. Wanting a ride really bad, the guy jumped in the car and closed the door, only then did he realize that there was nobody behind the wheel. The car slowly started moving and the guy was terrified, too scared to think of jumping out and running. The guy saw that the car was slowly approaching a sharp curve, still too scared to jump out, he started to pray and begging for his life; he was sure the ghost car would go off the road and into the marsh and he would surely drown, when just before the curve, a hand appeared through the driver's window and turned the steering wheel, guiding the car safely around the bend. Paralyzed with fear, the guy watched the hand reappear every time they reached a curve. Finally the guy, scared to near death, had all he could take and jumped out of the car and ran to town. Wet and in shock, he went into a bar and voice quavering, ordered two shots of whiskey, then told everybody about his supernatural experience. A silence enveloped and everybody got goose bumps when they realized the guy was telling the truth and was not just some drunk. About half an hour later two guys walked into the bar and one says to the other: "Look Bubba, there's that idiot who rode in our car when we were pushing it in the rain." thanks but i didnt make it up i got it in am e-mail but it was one i had never heard before  more

Resolved Question: Has anyone been to the Interstate 4 "Dead Zone" outside of Orlando?

This is supposed to be haunted by four angry spirits whose graves lie under the east bound lane of the expressway. There are more accidents there than any other place on the highway. This is a one mile stretch of the highway on the southern bank of the St. James River (northern boundary of Seminole County). I passed through it and saw it was quite beautiful with marsh and river all around. Also, its where other major roads lead out of the city so traffic gets very congested right there. If I had a sense of anything, it was not malicious spirits (like the "medium" they had on TV). I had a sense of "geez these people drive way to fast for this much traffic". Also, I looked over at the eastbound lane and it was very congested. It is also very obvious which part the graves are under. I think that is terrible, but I got a sense of sorrow, not a sense of anger. What do you think about these ghost stories?  more

Resolved Question: How did Liberals steal the Environment issue from Conservatives?

I should like to begin with a quiz. What prominent person said the following: “There is an absolute necessity of waging all-out war against the debauching of the environment. The bulldozer mentality of the past is a luxury we can no longer afford. Our roads and other public projects must be planned to prevent the destruction of scenic resources and to avoid needlessly upsetting the ecological balance.” The most frequent guesses are: Al Gore, Barbra Streisand, and Ralph Nader The answer is: Governor Ronald Reagan, in 1970 Conservatives tend to reject extreme environmental policies that destroy industry in favor of marsh insects, scrap fish, and obscure birds. They reject the idea that animal life trumps human life. However, conservatives also hate waste and destruction and want to conserve the environment. The origional Conservation movement began on the Right. Unfortunately today, the shrill apocalyptic brand of environmentalism (i.e. Al Gore) has won out...for now.  more

I often walk back from the gym at night and to get back to my town I go along this road which is surrounded by thick woods, fields, marshes and rivers/streams.
