I don't believe I've heard anyone criticize the book before. All my friend love it and I think people are too scared to talk negatively about it, but I have a bone to pick and I was wondering if anyone else feels similarly. I've seen a few of the movies (and parts of all the ones I haven't watched all the way through) and I finally read the first book of the series. So I feel as though I have a bit of room to say that it's not that great. Just a few points to support my stance: Her formula is threadbare. Potter goes to school. Potter finds conflict with Draco. Potter discovers mystery concering Voldemort. Potter solves mystery and comes face to face with Voldemort (alone). They fight. Potter lives. Most people cheer. Some don't trust him. The End. It feels eerily familiar to any teen mystery novel. Hardy Boys? Nancy Drew? Scooby Doo minus the dog? She's not inventing anything new in the magical world. Even the three headed dog (Cerberus?) who is lulled to sleep by music (common myth of beats) is cliche. Not to mention the giant, enchanted castle to wander around in, forbidden forests, Centaurs, and a well understood antagonist named Draco from the house of Slytherin (hmmm...snake? how subtle, Rowling). And honestly, people, I thought we were getting tired these stories of kids outsmarting the adults. What kind of brilliant adult sorcerers make a series of spells to protect something that are nothing but simple puzzles that 3 (meddling) 11yearolds can figure out? "Let's protect the stone with our magic! But instead of making it impossible for anyone to get through (even though we're accredited as being the safest place in the world) let's just make it a series of games and puzzles...like catching the right key on a broom stick and playing a giant game of chess! ok ok, we'll throw in a stolen greek-mythology dog (ironically named "fluffy" because that's funny and oh so original. haha) and a giant plant that first year students know about and can ward off on their own. Brilliant! No wonder we're the best in the world!" *sigh* One last comment for Rowling: Don't put the solution to your mystery on the front cover! "Gee, Hagard, What's in the brown bag? What is the dog guarding? Oh wait, 'Harry Potter and the SORCERER'S STONE.'" Mystery solved. Done! Anyway, I'm wanting to hear opinions. Does anyone feel the same way I do? If you love the book (God knows, the world does) how do you overlook these things? It's like Cliche heaven crammed into 300 pages. This is what has people going bonkers? I've done twilight. She's a terrible writer, her story has been done before, her characters are creepy as all hell, and it's lame. Still, I have to give her credit for at least trying to be original with sparkly vampires (although, it was a terrible attempt and failed miserably). What originality did Rowling have? I don't take the "it's a young adult book" excuse. 2 reasons: 1) there are brilliant young adult books out there that stretch the mind, not condense it. to say, "hurray! our kids are reading!" is sad. You want to know why our countries can't keep up in education? Because our kids aren't reading anything better than this. Low standards don't solve problems. (ps. now that we got them reading the crap, let's make movies about it for them to watch so that we can still keep them hooked on cinema. Heck, we could probably even make a few video games and keep them on those too...). 2)It may have once been aimed at a younger audience, but it's not anymore. adults love this. I watched it a while back, like 5 or 6 years ago. It was about Scooby and Shaggy [not sure if the rest were there] and they went to this boarding school place where it's always Halloween. There were 7 girls [I think] there: I remember one was Dracula's daughter, another was a zombie, one was a werewolf, and one was a mummy. I don't remember the other ones, but I know the mummy-girls name was Tennis, and she was the youngest [or at least smallest]. All 7 girls had fathers [like the mummy-girl's father was a big mummy, and the werewolf-girl's father was a bigger werewolf, etc.] and the fathers visited them. There was a witch who hypnotized the girls and almolst killed Scooby and Shaggy. I just love older video games,they seem like so much fun. My uncle is 10 years older then me,and he was the one with the video game consoles in the house. He had a SNES and PS1,and I just loved watching him play the PS1. But..I never got to play any Nintendo games,I only had a GBA with badish games(Barbie,Disney,some Sonic game and Scooby Doo..). And,I stinked,and still stink,at SNES games. So now I'm playing old games. ;) I just brought a Nintendo 64 and have Pokemon Snap. (First of all if you don't believe that dreams symbolize or mean things then please don't bother answering. That's your opinion and I have mine.) I've been having this dream for years now. I don't have it frequently, but it comes up every once and a while. They're not the same dream but they always end up in the same place. For the past few years I've been having dreams that I'm at an amusement park. But for some reason I only go on the rides where you walk through them or the ones you sit down-walkthroughs. (and the theme of the ride varies.) The park is colorful but the colors are a little faded so it looks darker. (Kind of like....an episode of Scooby Doo I guess. The place is bright but the colours are faded to make it look creepier.) Nothing seems wrong with the place except it's deserted (barely anyone is ever there.) and it feels....eerie. I feel like someone's watching me because barely anyone is there or there's just no one there but the rides and stands are all up and running but I'm the only one there. And throughout the dreams I feel freaked out by the eeriness and don't want to be there and I can't find a way out, so I keep going on the rides in hope that I might find an exit. Now it's been like that for years now. And just a week ago I had it again but this time it was different. This time I wasn't too freaked out by the walk through's. I was used to the darkness and kind of saw what was coming But then I saw another ride that was either broken or shut down. But this time I actually went inside the broken one and the theme was sort of a tribute to some guy. you first walk through this long hallway and on the walls are nothing but pictures of him.(kind of like a time line.) (oh and someone followed me in. I guess they were a friend. they were dressed as Batman. XDDD If it helps: Batman is my favorite comic book hero.) The person that the ride was a tribute to looked strange and mysterious. He was always in this white suit with a hat and you never saw his face. (kind of like Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal.) The hate hid his face and you never saw it. So I kept walking and looking at all the pictures of him and none of them ever showed his face. and then the last one.... I don't know why but it disturbed me and it wasn't that big of a deal Of course you know, when there's a time line for someone it's OBVIOUSLY going to tell us when he died. Well the last picture of him was for his death. Of course it didn't show his face, and his head was turned the other way so you couldn't see it. his back was pretty much turned to you and he was lying on the ground dead, and some streetlight I guess was over him and over it said when he died but didn't tell us how. for some reason it scared me and I turned around and told the guy that was with me that I didn't want to be in there anymore and that I wanted to hurry up and leave. For some reason he was sitting down playing some game I think. he ignored me and he mistook what I said thinking that the only reason I wanted to leave was because it was dark. so he flipped some switch and a few lights came on. but they flickered a lot. And then told him that wasn't the reason and I just wanted to leave. I kept looking around nervously because I felt that someone was watching us. I looked around and where the actual ride starts (there's the long hallway and then there's the place where the ride starts.) there was a booth. like a ticket booth. It looked like someone was in it. (but it was just some doll looking thing they put up for decoration.) I tried looking into the actual ride itself but it was too dark to see anything. Then I heard something in the darkness and freaked out and started running and right when I did I woke up. I tried looking it up and I only found a few things. The abandoned amusement park is supposed to stand for not having enough excitement/fun in my life. (which is true.) and me trying to find an exit stands for trying to find a way out of a situation I'm in. (Which is also true because I have been having problems and not sure how to solve them.)
